In ayurveda, diabetes is known as "madhumeha" and it is related to kapha type of disorder. In ayurvedic treatment, there is about 20 types of diabetes of which 6 belongs to pitta type, 4 belong to vata and 10 belong to kapha type. Diabetes and ayurveda care helps to eliminate the problem completely.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a kind of metabolic disorder. Metabolism deals in the process of digesting foods. Foods are broken down to glucose and it is present in blood as sugar. Insulin is a hormone produced by pancreas and it helps the glucose in the blood to move to body cells.

A person with diabetes contains more amount of glucose in the blood because of their insulin level. In this state body does not produce enough insulin or no insulin at all. Because of this condition cells in our body do not get the required energy and growth properly.

Causes for disorder

  • Lack of physical exercise

  • Stress and strain

  • Eating fatty foods

  • Sleeping more than 10 hours in a day

Ayurvedic therapy for diabetes

Diabetes and ayurveda care treat through 4 main components such as lifestyles changes, diet modification, herbs and panchakarma.

Herbs: The herb plays a very important role in reducing glucose level in the blood. Turmeric and Aloe Vera gel are given to affected persons to regulate the function of pancreas and liver. Apart from these other herbs that are helpful in curing diabetes are gudmar turmeric, neem, amalaki, guggul, Arjuna, and shilajit. All these are powdered and taken orally twice or thrice a day.

Diet modification: The main thing in diabetes is to modify the diet in order to reduce half of the problem. The elements to be avoided while eating are sugar, carbohydrate, protein and fatty substance. Vegetable, bitter fruits, lemon, orange and herbs are highly recommended.

Panchakarma: This treatment is given to our body to remove toxic elements. This process incudes massage with herbal oil, Nasya, and cleanse the body in the part of rectum through massage.

Lifestyle changes: Lifestyle problems are eliminated to cure diabetes through regulating our day to day activities such as sleep, exercise, emotional behaviour, and taking your food at the right time without skipping any meal.

  • Half glass of bitter gourd juice twice a day to cure diabetes

  • Take gooseberry juice early morning in empty stomach

  • Crush 3 to 4 garlic pieces and sallow it without chewing then drink plenty of water

  • Neem leaf juice is very beneficial for health

  • Brahmi powder is mixed with a glass of milk

  • Turmeric and ginger are taken in equal quantity along with water to minimize diabetes

How to reduce diabetes

  • Diabetes and ayurveda care, diet chart has to be followed to minimize or eliminate the disorder. Avoiding substances like sweets, carbohydrate & dairy products. Include lots of fresh vegetable and bitter herbal items in your menu.

  • Regular mediation and yoga exercise such as Pranayama, Paschimottanasan etc.

  • Reduce your weight if you are overweight or obese.

  • Avoid napping during daytime.

  • Avoid smoking.
