Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. It has been studied for its potential health benefits, including its role in supporting hormonal balance and its antioxidant properties.
DIM is a phytonutrient formed when indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is broken down. I3C can be found in cruciferous vegetables, such as those in the Brassica family, like red cabbage, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower.
DIM or diindolylmethane has been found to improve estrogen metabolism by altering liver function in a way that increases the rate at which estrogens are metabolized into inactive forms, thus clearing the excess from the body, which is generally beneficial in PCOS as most women with the condition also have relative estrogen dominance. It also blocks some effects of estrogen, though it may increase others. It is also an anti-androgen, reducing the amount of testosterone in the body, which is also usually a hallmark feature of PCOS.
Diindolylmethane (DIM) has been suggested to have various health benefits, including:
- Hormonal balance: DIM is thought to help regulate estrogen levels and may improve symptoms of conditions related to hormonal imbalances, such as PMS and menopause.
- Antioxidant properties: DIM is a potent antioxidant that can help protect cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals.
- Cancer prevention: Some studies have suggested that DIM may have anti-cancer properties and may help prevent the development of certain types of cancer, such as breast, cervical, and prostate cancer.
- Immune system support: DIM has been shown to boost the immune system and help the body fight infections and diseases.
