Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition affecting any body part, including the lower legs. Here are some tips to help manage eczema in your lower leg:
Keep your skin moisturized: Apply a moisturizer to your lower legs at least twice a day to help prevent dryness and itching. Choose a fragrance-free moisturizer that is specifically formulated for eczema-prone skin.
- Avoid irritants: Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or irritants that can trigger eczema, such as detergents, fabric softeners, and soaps. Use mild, fragrance-free products instead.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing: Choose loose-fitting clothing made of soft, breathable cotton or bamboo. Avoid wool or synthetic fabrics that can irritate your skin.
- Use lukewarm water: Avoid hot water, which can strip your skin of natural oils. Instead, use lukewarm water when washing your legs, and limit your time in the water to 10-15 minutes.
- Pat dry: Dry your legs with a soft towel after bathing or showering. Avoid rubbing your skin, which can further irritate eczema.
- Venous insufficiency: due to Venous insufficiency, you get eczema. Stasis dermatitis, also called gravitational dermatitis, venous eczema, and venous stasis dermatitis, happens when there is venous insufficiency or poor circulation in the lower legs.
- Apply topical medications: If your eczema is severe, your doctor may prescribe topical corticosteroids or other medications to help manage your symptoms.
- Manage stress: Stress can trigger eczema flare-ups, so try to manage your stress levels with yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
Some herbal health food supplements may help reverse and prevent gravitational dermatitis/eczema.
