Nattokinase is a fibrinolytic enzyme extracted from a traditional Japanese food called natto, which is made from fermented soybeans. It is believed to have the ability to dissolve blood clots and improve circulation and is commonly used as a dietary supplement to support cardiovascular health.
As a result of directly hydrolyzing fibrin and plasmin substrates, nattokinase dissolves blood clots. The enzyme converts endogenous prourokinase to urokinase (uPA). The enzyme also degrades plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) and increases tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA).
Nattokinase is believed to have several potential health benefits due to its fibrinolytic (clot-dissolving) properties. Some of the potential benefits include the following:
- People with poor circulation or at risk of cardiovascular disease may benefit from nattokinase because it may dissolve blood clots and improve blood flow.
- Lowering blood pressure: Nattokinase may help to reduce blood pressure by dissolving clots that can restrict blood flow and increase resistance in the blood vessels.
- Reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke: Nattokinase may help to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke by dissolving clots that can block blood flow to the heart and brain.
- Reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis: Nattokinase may help to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein deep in the body.
- Reducing inflammation: Nattokinase may also have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help to reduce the risk of various chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
